The UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination is the first stage of the UPSC Civil Services Examination, which is a highly competitive exam conducted annually by the UPSC of India. The Prelims exam serves as a screening test for candidates who aspire to join the prestigious Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and other central services.
The Preliminary Examination comprises two compulsory papers, both of which are objective in nature (multiple-choice questions). The details of GS Paper 1 are as follows:
General Studies Paper 1 (GS Paper 1)
General Studies Paper 2 (CSAT)
The CSAT paper (GS Paper 2) is of qualifying nature, meaning candidates need to secure at least 33% marks (66 out of 200) to qualify. The marks obtained in GS Paper 1 are considered for the cut-off.
Cut-off: The cut-off for the Preliminary Examination is determined based on the marks obtained in GS Paper 1 only. Candidates need to clear the cut-off to qualify for the Main Examination.
Total Marks: The total marks for the Preliminary Examination (considering both papers) are 400.
